Tooth Brushing Instructions During Orthodontic Treatment

What to do in case of an emergency

Call our office as soon as possible to notify us if you need an appliance repaired or have any other concern. You should call immediately even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, because repairing an appliance takes special work. To contact us about an immediate need, you may also send a text message to 571.244.7329
By calling or texting us before you come to the office, you’ll allow us to schedule an appropriate amount of time for your appointment.

Loose Brackets or Bands

Call our office immediately if a bracket or wire has become loose. The bracket may need to be refitted as soon as possible. You may have developed a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you.

Wire Irritations

Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax.

Lost Separators

Most patients lose a separator during their treatment, so do not worry about losing one. Just call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment

During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. Dr. Calkins will gladly implement her standard of care through Acceledent, which is the latest technology in pain and discomfort management.

Admit it. You think all orthodontic offices are the same. Most are. We aren’t. We believe your experience should be something special.
